Policies & Procedures

Policies and procedures provide guidelines for completion of specific tasks, decision-making and should always conform to regulatory requirements.
Your company medication policy will be an overall guide, which sets the boundaries within which an action will take place, and should reflect the philosophy of care for your company/organisation.
Your company medication procedures should incorporate a series of related, easy to follow steps designed to accomplish specific tasks with the intention of promoting good practice and consistency in line with regulatory requirements and local authority guidelines.
A well-defined procedure will create a strong and consistent standard of care delivery within the medication process. Easy to follow procedures will also save time from unnecessary questioning when situations occur.
Should you have a new staff member or an agency staff member on duty who doesn’t know your service particularly well and there are questions raised like “What do I do if”? Or “How do I”? Or “What should I do in the event of”? Then it is likely that you will need to have a particular procedure in place for staff guidance.
All procedures relating to your medication management must be easy to read and easy to follow.
It goes without saying that if your staff group are not familiar with your policy or a procedure relating to your service then it is likely that errors WILL occur.
Unfortunately a lot of staff working in care homes, particularly care staff rather than qualified nurses, may have limited knowledge about the complexity of the medication process and the consequences that can happen if procedures are not in place and regulatory guidelines are not accurately followed.
